How to Become Certified?      
       
Certification in the specialty areas listed on the right is available to technicians, supervisors and contractors. Each participant in the certification program has to meet certain minimum requirements before he or she can be certified.
 
  • For technicians the requirements are:
    • An individual with respect to whom contributions are payable to the International Training Institute, as further defined in and subject to the Plan
    • All instructors or part-time instructors employed by a local union or a sheet metal industry joint apprenticeship training fund, or
    • An individual performing sheet metal industry work under the provisions of a building trades collective bargaining agreement negotiated by a local union, if such agreement is accepted by the international union so long as contributions are payable to the International Training Institute with respect to the individual
    • An individual who is temporarily unemployed (not retired), whose most recent employment was a position with respect to which Contributions were payable to the International Training Institute, and who either is available to accept such a position or is temporarily unable to work on account of sickness or disability,
    • An individual who is temporarily employed for purposes of organizing an employer in the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry
  • For supervisors the requirements are:
    • Be employed by a contractor signatory to a collective bargaining agreement that provides for contributions directly to NEMIC, and the employer is current with all financial obligations under that collective bargaining agreement.
    • Furthermore, the supervisor must meet the following pre-requisites:
      • Has a college/university degree in engineering with at least one (1) year experience in HVAC installation or design work, OR
      • Has a two (2) year associate degree in HVAC with at least three (3) years experience in HVAC installation or design work, OR
      • Is an ICB Certified TAB technician and has five (5) or more years experience in HVAC installation or design work (which may include apprenticeship), at least one (1) of which must include testing, adjusting and balancing work, OR
      • Signatory to a collective bargaining agreement that provides for contributions directly to NEMIC, and is current with all financial obligations under that collective bargaining agreement.
  • For contractors the requirements are:
    • Signatory to a collective bargaining agreement that provides for contributions directly to NEMIC, and is current with all financial obligations under that collective bargaining agreement.
    • Meets all eligibilities for each specialty requesting certification.

Path to Certification Testing
  • Prior to testing all applicants must submit their application through this website. To start your application, please select a certification specialty in the right hand column and then click on the "Get Certified Now" button
  • The applicant's eligibility must be verified before an exam can be administered.
  • All exams must be proctored and are available in written or online format.
  • Results for online exams are available immediately.
  • Results for written exams take at least one (1) week to post.
